Overview of American Airlines Cargo:
American Airlines Cargo: A 75-Year Journey
For 75 years American Airlines Cargo has flown to important places in North America, Europe, Latin America and Asia. The company’s history goes back to a group of air transport companies that came together to form American Airways which was the direct predecessor to American Airlines. The first American Airlines cargo flight was a cargo flight from Chicago to St. Louis with mail and was flown by Charles Lindbergh.
Over the years the company has developed many technologies that changed the way things are done. These include the world’s first scheduled air cargo service, the first air cargo tariff, the first coast-to-coast all cargo flight, air freight loading conveyors, corrugated containers for shipping ready-to-wear clothing, the first unit load device (ULD), the first air hub and spoke system, air freight terminals, scissor-lift systems, pet carrier containers for air travel, the first coast-to-coast jet service, the first in-plane roller system, the first powered cargo loader (the Astroloader for the 707 aircraft), the first “igloo” cargo container, the first refrigerated cargo container and the first U.S.-based passenger carrier approved to carry the temperature-controlled Envirotainer e2 unit.
American Airlines is always changing and building for the future. To give customers and shippers a more modern and connected experience they have added hundreds of new flights to their fleet. Shipping tools are available to help you figure out what size doors will fit, what sizes are acceptable and whether the container or plane will work with it.
In short American Airlines Cargo has been flying cargo to important places around the world for 75 years. They are a leader because they are always coming up with new ideas and want to give people a current and connected experience.
