The Dahanu Taluka Environment Protection Authority (DTEPA) has given the go-ahead for building a new port at Vadhavan, which is near Dahanu in the Palghar district of Maharashtra. The state-owned Jawaharlal Nehru Port Authority (JNPA) asked the DTEPA for permission to build the satellite port. The Ministry of Environment, Forest, and Climate Change (MoEF&CC) at first thought the area was environmentally fragile. The NOC made it possible for JNPA to build and run the port, but only under certain conditions set by MoEF&CC and its officials.

It was also hard to find materials for restoration, which led to the decision to move the port offshore. Because the area is so sensitive to environmental damage, the new plan will get its fill material from marine grab pits off the coast of Daman instead of using earth filling. Because of the limits on growth at Nhava Sheva, building a new port at Vadhavan is very important to JNPA’s plans to grow.

The port authority and the Maharashtra Maritime Board will work together to build the new port. Each will have a 74% stake in the business, while the other will have a 26% stake. An estimate says that the new port will cost Rs 73,894 crores. Private companies will spend Rs15,157 crore in the first phase and Rs16,471 crore in the second phase to build cargo processing facilities. The JNPA will spend Rs42,266 crore on basic infrastructure. The Union Cabinet gave its “in-principle” approval for the new port, which will be able to handle 254 million tonnes of cargo, which is the same as 9.87 million twenty-foot equivalent units, or TEUs.
