Union Minister for Ports, Shipping, and Waterways Sarbananda Sonowal laid out a plan for India’s maritime industry. She set out important plans that will make a big difference. Sonowal talked about the big plan to build Hydrogen Hubs in ports run by the Central Government and the State Government. He said this was part of the government’s effort to promote sustainable development. He also said that all big ports have finished making their Port Master Plans for 2047 and that states are beginning to do the same.

In 2047, the country’s ports will be able to handle more than 10,000 MTPA, up from about 2,600 MTPA now. The Ministry of Ports, Shipping, and Waterways set up the two-day meeting so that Union Territories (UTs), State Maritime Boards, necessary and notified ports, and State Governments could work together better. From October 17th to October 19th, 2023, the Bharat Mandapam in New Delhi will host the Global Maritime India Summit 2023, which is one of the most critical meetings in the country.

The maritime industry is about to grow a lot, and there are investment opportunities worth more than 10 lakh crore. This ever-increasing financial opportunity is more than just an economic boom; it’s a chance to give over 15 lakh young people in the country jobs, which would be both good for business and good for society. To support this goal, private players are gradually playing a more significant role. For example, Public-Private Partnership (PPP) terminals handle about half of the cargo at major ports, and plans are underway to increase that number to 85% in the next few decades.

Sonowal also talked about the Sagarmala Program. She said that over the past eight years, the strategic initiatives of the Sagarmala Program have greatly improved port capacity, connectivity, and operational efficiency. These initiatives have also lowered costs, sped up vessel turnaround times, made it possible for bigger ships to dock, and made Indian ports more strategically important in South Asia. He told the governments of all the Coastal States and Union Territories that they should always back MoPSW, MoRTH, and MoR to speed up these critical projects.
