The Inland Waterways Authority of India (IWAI) has improved the operations and management (O&M) of its Pandu and Dhubri ports to help Assam and the Northeast send more goods to Bangladesh and South Asia. The goal of the Public Private Partnership (PPP) plan is to increase the amount of cargo moving from 0.5 million MT to 3 million MT from Assam and the Northeast. People involved in the deal expect it to create at least 73,000 person-days of work each year while the contract is in effect.

The PPP approach will make the private O&M contractor more efficient and give them more drive to bring in cargo for export to both ports. At the same time, the IWAI will make sure that everything moves smoothly so that it can reach its goal of driving 3 million MT of goods from Dhubri and Pandu ports in the first two years. A private operator will run and handle the Pandu and Dhubri terminals, which are both fully controlled by IWAI. This is to improve efficiency and cargo moving on the National Waterway-2 and Indo-Bangladesh Protocol (IBP) routes.

The PPP approach will bring in the best practices from around the world, which will open up substantial trade opportunities in both the Pandu and Dhubri ports. The present system will lead to a logistics system that is more open and professional.
